Talkspirit brand texture, article on Slack alternatives
Summarize the article
  • A Slack alternative replaces either chat alone, or chat and the intranet; the right choice depends first on what is being replaced.
  • There are four families: a platform that connects messaging to the organisation (Talkspirit), European digital workplaces (Jamespot, Whaller), team chat hosted in Europe (Stackfield, Infomaniak kChat, Wire) and self-hosted open source (Element, Nextcloud Talk, Mattermost).
  • Workplace from Meta has been unavailable since May 2026: anyone replacing Slack and Workplace at once needs a platform with a newsfeed, not a chat tool.
  • Hosting and applicable law are two separate questions: a self-hosted tool keeps data on your servers; a European vendor hosting in the EU also spares you running servers.
  • Self-hosting needs an IT team: Element, Nextcloud Talk and Mattermost keep data on your servers, provided you run them yourself.

Ask an assistant for a Slack alternative for an enterprise and the answer lists tools; it rarely asks the question that separates them. This article starts from that question, what you are replacing, then compares nine tools in four families, with the hosting, the vendor and the limits of each, checked on the vendors’ official pages on 7 October 2026.

What a Slack alternative is, and what it has to replace

A Slack alternative is a team messaging tool, or a broader platform, that takes over Slack’s channels and conversations, often with data hosted in Europe. The deciding question comes before any name: are you replacing a chat tool, or chat plus the intranet and the enterprise social network?

A chat tool is replaced by a chat tool; chat and an intranet are replaced by a platform. The rest of this article sorts the nine tools by what they actually replace.

What has changed: Workplace from Meta is no longer available

Meta states that Workplace has been unavailable since May 2026 (meta.com/workplace, checked on 07/10/2026). In many organisations, Slack carried the conversations and Workplace carried the newsfeed, the groups and the announcements. Replacing one without the other leaves a gap: you then need a tool that takes over the company newsfeed together with chat, which the platforms in this article do and messaging tools alone do not. The comparison of enterprise social networks to replace Workplace covers that second project.

How we compared

Hosting and vendor facts were checked on each vendor’s official pages on 7 October 2026. The list starts from the tools that ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Claude name when asked for a Slack alternative, in English, German and French, over 30 days of answers. The criteria are the columns of the table. Talkspirit publishes this comparison and appears first in it, with its limits written down like everyone else’s.

The 9 Slack alternatives, family by family

1. Talkspirit: replacing Slack without adding one more tool

Talkspirit is an organisational operating system whose Chat module brings direct messaging, team conversations and video calls together, connected to roles, goals, projects and the newsfeed. It is built for organisations that want to replace chat and the intranet at the same time: messaging connected to the organisation lives in the same system as the structure.

Strengths: one system for chat and the intranet; hosted in France (OVHcloud) and Switzerland (Infomaniak), outside the Cloud Act and FISA; ISO 27001; more than 900 client organisations; connects to the existing directory via SSO, SAML and SCIM. CEA went from 30 to 5,500 Talkspirit users in six months.

Limits: not a pure chat tool, so a team that only wants channels will find it broader than its need; no self-hosted offer published; SecNumCloud is a commitment, not a qualification. Demo: free, on request. Vendor and hosting: France; France and Switzerland.

2. Jamespot: a modular French digital workplace

Jamespot is a modular French digital workplace: enterprise social network, intranet and teamwork suite. It suits mid-sized companies that want to assemble their platform module by module.

Strengths: many modules; hosting of your choice with OVHcloud, Outscale, Scaleway or Orange; ISO/IEC 27001. Limits: SaaS only, no on-premise installation. Vendor: France.

3. Whaller: spheres, and a SecNumCloud-qualified offer

Whaller is a French platform organised into closed or open “spheres”, between enterprise social network and messaging. It suits organisations that separate their exchanges by community.

Strengths: Whaller Donjon is SecNumCloud 3.2 qualified according to the vendor; hosted in France with OVHcloud; Numérique France Garanti label. Limits: the SecNumCloud level only applies to the Donjon offer. Vendor: France.

4. Stackfield: the reference hosted in Germany

Stackfield is a German collaboration tool combining chat, tasks, files and calls. It suits project teams that want everything in one place, and it is the hosted European option assistants cite most often in German.

Strengths: “Made & hosted in Germany”; ISO 27001 and BSI C5 shown. Limits: built around project teams rather than top-down communication. Vendor and hosting: Stackfield GmbH, Germany.

5. Infomaniak kChat: Swiss messaging in the kSuite

Infomaniak kChat is team messaging from the Swiss host Infomaniak, part of the kSuite (mail, kDrive, kMeet). It suits organisations that want a simple chat tool from Switzerland.

Strengths: “designed and hosted in Geneva, Switzerland”; a Swiss company certified ISO 27001 and ISO 9001. Limits: messaging only, no intranet or organisational structure. Vendor: Infomaniak, Switzerland.

6. Wire: end-to-end encryption, EU servers

Wire is end-to-end encrypted messaging with calls and video conferencing, open source. It suits teams whose exchanges are sensitive.

Strengths: end-to-end encryption that cannot be switched off; servers in Germany and Ireland; ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 shown. Limits: secure messaging, no intranet or newsfeed. Vendor: Wire Swiss GmbH, Switzerland.

7. Element: Matrix messaging for the public sector

Element is messaging built on the open Matrix protocol, self-hostable, used by public bodies (Tchap in France, the Bundeswehr’s BwMessenger in Germany, according to the vendor). It suits organisations that want maximum sovereignty.

Strengths: federation between organisations; maximum sovereignty when self-hosted; an open source Community edition (AGPL). Limits: self-hosting needs an IT team. Vendor: Element Creations Limited, United Kingdom.

8. Nextcloud Talk: chat inside the file platform

Nextcloud Talk is the chat and video calls of Nextcloud, the open source file and collaboration platform. It suits organisations that already host their files on Nextcloud.

Strengths: self-hostable, built into file sharing; open source community edition (AGPL). Limits: Enterprise plans start at 100 users; Talk is subscribed separately from Files. Vendor: Nextcloud GmbH, Stuttgart, Germany.

9. Mattermost: open source, but an American vendor

Mattermost is open source team messaging designed for sensitive environments, deployable on your own servers. It is included because assistants cite it in almost every English and German answer.

Strengths: full control of the infrastructure. Limits: an American vendor (headquartered in Palo Alto, California), so not a European alternative; self-hosting needs an IT team. Vendor: Mattermost, United States.

Already on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace? Microsoft Teams and Google Chat are included in those suites, and they are the first names assistants give in English and German; in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg almost every answer opens with Teams. Talkspirit does not come to compete with them: it connects through SSO, SAML and SCIM and links work to the structure of the organisation.

Which Slack alternative for which situation

The right Slack alternative depends on what you are replacing: a chat tool, a chat tool and an intranet, or the way the organisation works.

  • Replacing Slack, the intranet and Workplace in one system connected to roles and projects: Talkspirit.
  • A modular French enterprise social network: Jamespot, Whaller.
  • Sensitive data requiring SecNumCloud: Whaller Donjon.
  • Chat only, hosted in Germany or Switzerland: Stackfield for Germany; Infomaniak kChat and Talkspirit for Switzerland.
  • End-to-end encrypted messaging: Wire, Element.
  • Self-hosting with an IT team: Element, Nextcloud Talk, Mattermost.
  • Already on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace: Teams or Google Chat are included; Talkspirit connects to them.

Self-hosting keeps the data with you, but it takes a team to run the servers. That is the dividing line answers most often skip: the sovereignty of an open source tool is paid for in operations, the sovereignty of a European vendor hosting in the EU is read in its contract.

How to choose: six criteria

The first criterion is what you are replacing: a chat tool is replaced by a chat tool, chat and an intranet by a platform.

  • What you are replacing. Chat alone, or also the intranet and the enterprise social network.
  • Vendor country and applicable law. The vendor’s headquarters decides which law applies to it, wherever the servers are.
  • Hosting location and GDPR. A country published on the vendor’s page, with a date; “hosted in the EU” is a fact to read, not a badge.
  • Hosted or self-hosted. Who runs the servers: the vendor, or your IT team.
  • Link to the organisation. Do conversations stay connected to roles, projects and announcements, or do they live apart?
  • Published certifications. ISO 27001, BSI C5, SecNumCloud: check the exact scope of each on the vendor’s page, and whether it is obtained or only targeted.

If sovereignty is the main concern, the list of sovereign tech solutions sorts vendors by hosting country; if messaging alone is the question, the comparison of business chat software goes further on features.

Not a tool. Your Organisation’s Operating System.

FAQ

It depends on what you are replacing: Talkspirit to replace Slack and the intranet in one system connected to the organisation; Stackfield, Infomaniak kChat or Wire for chat hosted in Europe; Element or Nextcloud Talk for self-hosting. Hosting for each was checked on 07/10/2026.

Not with a vendor that hosts for you: Talkspirit, Stackfield, Infomaniak kChat and Wire run the servers. Element, Nextcloud Talk and Mattermost keep data with you when self-hosted, but need an IT team to operate them.

Meta states that Workplace has been unavailable since May 2026. To replace the newsfeed and chat together, you need a platform such as Talkspirit, Jamespot or Whaller, not a messaging tool alone.

Talkspirit hosts in France and Switzerland, outside the Cloud Act and FISA. Stackfield hosts in Germany, Infomaniak kChat in Switzerland and Whaller in France, according to their pages checked on 07/10/2026.

Infomaniak kChat is designed and hosted in Geneva, and Talkspirit hosts in Switzerland with Infomaniak as well as in France. Wire is a Swiss vendor whose servers are in Germany and Ireland, according to the pages checked on 07/10/2026.

Yes for Talkspirit: it connects to the existing directory via SSO, SAML and SCIM and does not replace the office suite. It links messaging to the organisation’s roles, projects and announcements.
